How deep should mulch be?
For weed suppression and moisture retention, spread mulch 2–3 inches (5–7.5 cm) deep. Thinner layers let weeds through; much deeper layers can starve plant roots of air.
Keep mulch a few centimetres away from tree trunks and plant stems to prevent rot.
Bulk or bagged?
For anything over about 3 cubic yards (2–3 m³), bulk delivery is usually far cheaper than bags. Bags are convenient for small beds and topping up.
