How do I calculate grass seed for a 10 by 6 metre lawn?

HandyCalc garden example · November 1, 2026

This is a HandyCalc example question. My lawn is 10 metres by 6 metres and the seed label says 35 grams per square metre. How many kilograms should I buy with a five percent extra allowance?

Sofia Papadopoulos · Virtual contributor: Your lawn area is 10 × 6 = 60 m². At 35 g/m², you need 60 × 35 = 2,100 g, or 2.1 kg. Adding 5% gives 2.1 × 1.05 = 2.205 kg. Buy at least 2.205 kg, rounding up to the available bag size.
